When a patch is enough.
A patch stops at the patch when three things are true: the repair is small, the texture matches, and you still have the original paint. A doorknob hole under six inches is a $150 patch. Add $112.50 for a texture match so the patch is not a flat, shiny rectangle under afternoon light. Touch it up with the original paint and the repair disappears.
When to repaint the wall.
The wall gets repainted when a touch-up would show. That happens when:
- No original paint. A color-matched can is close, but under certain light the touch-up edge reads as a different sheen or tint. The only way to eliminate that edge is to paint the whole wall.
- The patch is large. A 16-inch patch touched up with a brush will show a visible ring. Corner-to-corner repaint is the clean fix.
- Multiple repairs on one wall. Three patches touched up individually look like three patches. One repaint makes them all disappear.
A full single-wall repaint is $375. That sounds like more than a $150 patch, but it is the difference between a repair you forget and one you notice every time you walk in the room.
Paint blending.
Paint does not truly blend. It layers. A touch-up with a brush or roller leaves a visible edge where the new paint meets the old, because paint ages — even over a few months, UV and cleaning shift the color and sheen of the original wall. The touch-up is a slightly different color on a slightly different surface.
That is why we recommend repainting the wall corner-to-corner whenever the original paint is not available. The new paint is uniform across the whole wall, the patch is inside it, and there is no edge to find. If you have the original paint, a touch-up on a small patch can work — but it is a judgment call we make during the assessment.
